Camping

On Monday, I took Rachel, Jacob, Anna and her friend Bella, camping. Sarah wanted to stay home. She took care of all the animals for me. David was in Omaha. The weather was nice and we went to the waterslides. My children's behavior wasn't the best. Anna kept busy with her friend--but was starting to get bossy. Rachel got overstimulated alot with her sensory issues and flipped out quite a bit. ADD kicked in and it wasn't long until she was bored at everything we did. Jacob was "Jacob" and I realized that the kid really does have some social delays. He can't be in public without me by his side directing every move or word that comes out of his mouth! For example...he was in the hot tub at the pool with about 10 kids and adults in it, and out of the blue, he blurts out "I'm going to chop you up with a chainsaw!" WHAT? Where'd he get that one? He told me it was from a commerical. Great! The kids in the hot tub made fun of him and asked him why he talked funny,(he repeats words over an over again). They threatened to punch him also because he was so annoying. I should have intervened, but I didn't. I wanted to see how he related to others. I only see him with family or close friends. I did call him out of the hot tub and about 15 min later he returned. Anna and Bella were in there now also. Jacob got in and splashed and everyone finally gave up and got out. I've never seen a group of people all move at the same time like that. Poor Jacob. But the good thing is, he didn't realize that they were making fun of him. He hadn't a clue.
All I ever see or hear about is how he is in school. But those kids know him and are very patient with him. They even help him get though some of his frustration times when he freaks out and is under a desk.

Overall it was an OK trip. Nice to get away.

Good grief, Holly. You sound exhausted. Some vacation, huh? Sorry to hear about Jacob's over-the-edge behavior. Sort of weird to see adults leave because of his splashing. I don't think I would have let any of my kids in a hot tub. Too static. Not enough action. No wonder he splashed. But it's not intended to be a swimming pool. I'd've sent my kids into the wave pools or other LARGE areas with more space for jacob to be jacob for fun. :-)

Did you see Kristel & Co. when they were up to Mom and Dad's? I can't remember if she said she saw you or not.

Say, I'm writing a Young Andi story (easy reader) and am wondering if I can get Rachel to read it for me. She should have NO problem, as it is a 2.4 level. But it would be nice to get her feedback (as well as an excuse to get her to read something). I hope to pitch it to my editor next week. E-mail me and I'll send it as an attachment. (it's only 35 pages).
